Database Engineer

Short Description

We are looking for an experienced Senior Database Engineer with strong Microsoft SQL Server DBA expertise to support production database environments running on AWS and Kubernetes.The role focuses on the operational management, availability, performance and security of SQL Server environments, with a strong emphasis on troubleshooting, performance optimisation, automation and continuous improvement.You will work across database, cloud, infrastructure and application teams to maintain reliable production services and resolve complex technical issues.

Description

• Administer and maintain Microsoft SQL Server databases in production environments.
• Monitor database availability, performance, capacity and overall operational health.
• Troubleshoot complex issues involving connectivity, query performance, blocking, deadlocks and resource utilisation.
• Support SQL Server environments running on AWS, including EC2, EKS, S3 and EBS.
• Support SQL Server workloads running in Kubernetes and troubleshoot database, storage and resource-related issues.
• Manage backup, restore, high-availability and disaster-recovery activities.
• Support SQL Server Always On Availability Groups or equivalent HA solutions.
• Lead technical troubleshooting of production incidents and perform root cause analysis.
• Manage database access, permissions and security controls.
• Develop and maintain automation using T-SQL, PowerShell or similar technologies.
• Maintain runbooks, SOPs and operational documentation.
• Contribute to database reliability, performance and operational improvement initiatives.

Requirements

• Strong hands-on experience as a Microsoft SQL Server DBA / Database Engineer in production environments.
• Practical experience supporting SQL Server on AWS.
• Familiarity with AWS services including EC2, EKS, S3 and EBS.
• Experience or working knowledge of SQL Server in Kubernetes/containerised environments.
• Strong database performance tuning and troubleshooting skills.
• Understanding of high availability, backup, recovery and disaster recovery.
• Experience handling production incidents and performing root cause analysis.
• Knowledge of database security, access management and permissions.
• Scripting experience with T-SQL, PowerShell or similar technologies.
• Experience with database monitoring and observability tools.
• Good written and spoken English

Experience with SQL Server Always On, EKS, cloud-native HA solutions, infrastructure monitoring, automated database deployment or infrastructure-as-code would be an advantage.
